The ThornBearer (Penned in Time #1)
Ashley Dougall’s father stole her innocence, her selfish fiancé stole her heart, and
unforgiveness is slowly stealing her life. Drawn by the desire to help others, she tries to escape haunting memories and enlists her services as a nurse in war-torn Europe. Along with her childhood friend and fiance’s brother, Samuel Miller, the fragile threads holding Ashley’s life in place one-by-one begin to snap. From the deck of the ill-fated Lusitania to the smoke-filled trenches of WWI, Ashley must choose between forgiveness of the past, life in the present, and a Savior who is willing to help her face them both.
All I can say is “WOW!” Tender, faith-filled romance, interesting history, and after some physical and emotional trials, a happily-ever-after! This story offers all that I enjoy in a good book plus offers characters with depth and integrity, experiencing the joys and trials of life and the hardships of WWI. You felt Ashleigh’s pain and unworthiness from the first pages, and I eagerly read the story hoping she could find healing, peace and forgiveness for herself , for her ex-fiance, and for her abusive father. Sam’s character surprised me. He seemed like such an honorable man in manners and looks. By the end of the story his weaknesses and need to give forgiveness surfaced, and again I eagerly hoped he would reconcile his pride so he could be free to love and trust Ashleigh in a faithful marriage. Loved the historical details of the Lusitania and how the characters dealt with the wounded soldiers during World War 1. I found I needed a couple tissues before I finished the book. This first book by Pepper Basham is a worthy read!
