Review Time: The Wedding List by Autumn Macarthur

Book #1 in the Love in Store series.

You never forget your first love…

With her eye for design and her cut-glass accent, no-one would guess Beth Forrest’s impoverished background. It’s all throw pillows, china patterns, and upper class brides as she manages the Wedding Registry at Pettett & Mayfield, the stately maiden aunt of London department stores. It’s not quite her dream job, but each bride she helps to select beautiful and oh-so-expensive items for their gift list brings her one step closer to buying a little home of her own, and financing the education she longs for.

When physics professor James Tetherton-Hart, brilliant in his research lab but awkward and disorganised in everyday life, comes to the store in desperate need of both a gift and a partner for a wedding that evening and recognises her, all her careful plans and meticulous checklists are turned upside down.

Now her first love is back, determined to make her his partner for life, not just the evening. But unless Beth can let go of the mistaken beliefs that separated them in the past, and appreciate the depth and breadth of God’s love for us all, her only gift from the wedding will be another heartbreak.

WARNING
The Wedding List is a Christian romance!
Please don’t buy this book if you are offended by the G-bomb (God), Jesus, and mention of prayer, church, or the Bible.

My Review:
Sweet Christian novella that tackles the theme of self-worth and fear. Beth, as a teenager, worked as a maid for a wealthy family to earn a scholarship to attend a private school. James, the family’s son, becomes friends with Beth and falls in love with her. Before he can

declare his feelings, Imogen, a jealous friend of James, convinces Beth she is not good enough for James and that he would never love someone of her social status. Beth leaves her position, and her school, and returns home with a broken heart, no education, and very little self-esteem. Moving forward 10 years, Beth is now the head of the bridal department of a well-established retail store. She dreams of owning her own home and completing her education. She knows each sale brings her one day closer to fulfilling her dreams. James stops by the store to buy a wedding gift for Imogen’s wedding and recognizes Beth. All the feelings he had for her returns, but he realizes that whatever happened 10 years ago is still affecting Beth and holding her back from loving him again. Will Beth trust God enough to overcome her fears and recognize how much He wants to love and bless her and her relationship with James, or will she continue to judge herself unworthy?

This story was a quick read, somewhat predictable, and at times amusing.  I personally liked the way Ms. Macarthur related the theme of self-judgement and fear to how we should see ourselves and others through God’s eyes.
I also appreciated Ms. Macarthur’s “Warning” at the bottom of the book synopsis.  Folks, if you are following my blog then you should be aware that Christian themes and clean, family friendly books are going to come up in my blog.  I don’t write blogs with the purpose of offending anyone.  If the material presented offends you or you don’t like the blog, simply ‘unfollow’ it and let others enjoy it in peace.
I will also note that I won this book through a giveaway from the author.  I always do my best to give an honest review. I have been asked to review a book, but I am never paid nor required to review a book.
Note to Author:  Thank you Ms. Macarthur for the British dictionary at the end of the book. I enjoy learning new words.  My favorite word in this book was “collywobbles.”  I had a big chuckle when I saw this.  I am an American living in the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains.  We have some strange, cultural words where I live, like “mollycoddling,” which visually looks similar, but has a completely different meaning!

Note to followers: This is book #1 in the Love In Store series and it is currently offered for $0.99 on http://www.amazon.com. Here are the next books in the series.  I hope you will join me in reading this encouraging set of books.
