Review Time: Silver In The Blood by Jessica Day George

Book #1 in a new young adult/teen series.
Book #1 in a new young adult/teen series.

Society girls from New York City circa 1890, Dacia and Lou never desired to know more about their lineage, instead preferring to gossip about the mysterious Romanian family that they barely knew. But upon turning seventeen, the girls must return to their homeland to meet their relatives, find proper husbands, and—most terrifyingly—learn the deep family secrets of The Claw, The Wing, and The Smoke. The Florescus, after all, are shape-shifters, and it is time for Dacia and Lou to fulfill the prophecy that demands their acceptance of this fate… or fight against this cruel inheritance with all their might.

With a gorgeous Romanian setting, stunning Parisian gowns, and dark brooding young men, readers will be swept up by this epic adventure of two girls in a battle for their lives.

My review:

Based in Romanian folklore, this young adult novel adds a suspenseful twist to the story of Dracula. Cousins, Dacia and Lou, are teenage socialites from America. Their Romanian mothers insist they take a tour of Europe with the finale of their trip being their reunion with their Romanian family in Bucharest. The cousins travel separately and strange encounters leave them worried and confused about their family and its history. Free spirited Dacia loves adventure and romance. A near scandal with Lord John in London has her Aunt Kate whisking her away by train and keeping her under lock and key. As the train nears Bucharest, wolves surround the train bringing it to a stop. Curious to discover what is happening, Dacia discovers secrets about her aunt and is ushered even more forcibly to Bucharest. Timid, but lovely, Lou meets a strange man in Paris who asks her puzzling questions that frightens her. She continues to see the “Awful Man” on the train while traveling to Romania and suspects he is following her and her family. In Romania the cousins reconnect and begin working out the strange details only to find their family has a monsterous secret; and plans to return the Dracula family to the throne. With the help of unexpected friends, Dacia and Lou must embrace their heritage and race against the clock to stop an assassination and coup that could change the future of Romania and beyond!

Note to my clean read friends and parents of younger children: This is a paranormal story. There is brief mention of nudity in regards to transformation of a person into an animal and not used sexually. There is mild violence and gore during a battle scene. I personally enjoyed this suspenseful adventure plus the endearing friendship between Dacia and Lou, and I look forward to future books in this series.
