Let’s face it. Most of my book reviews cover Christian romance or “chick lit.” I’m a “happily ever after” sort of girl and proud of it. However, when my nephews were growing up, I found myself often shopping in the children’s book section and doing my part to encourage the boys to read. I found many delightful and adventurous books; many which took me back to fond memories of books that inspired me to read as a child. Even though my nephews are grown, I find that I still enjoy children’s literature and encouraging parents and children to read together.
Today I’m reviewing Heart of a Hero by Billi Tiner. Ms. Tiner is a veterinarian and her children’s literature truly captures the personalities of dogs and cats; bringing them to life in endearing stories that touch the heart. Check out all of Ms. Tiner’s children’s stories. I’ve listed them at the end of the blog for your convenience.
This is a wonderful story about the courage and loyalty of man’s best friend. “Lady” is a remarkably intelligent Irish Setter who finds her life changed by three people. At each turn in her life it seems a special owner arrives to give Lady renewed purpose; to love and care for people. Lady also serves in the war as a messenger dog and truly shines as a hero. This is a great book for elementary, early middle school age children. **SPOILER and NOTE TO PARENTS: I would like to mention the story has a bittersweet ending with Lady dying after many wonderful years. Though bittersweet, it is a natural part of life for animals and this story approaches the topic with gentleness and respect.
Lady, an Irish Setter puppy, is leading a simple life on a farm in Ohio during the 1940’s. Lady’s biggest desire is to become an expert hunting dog like her mother. She has no idea that her life is going to take her down a path where she will find herself in the middle of incredibly dangerous situations, including a world war. On several occasions, Lady will have to find the courage to risk her life in order to save someone she loves. The loyalty and bravery that Lady shows throughout her lifetime illustrate what it truly means to have the heart of a hero.
