I rarely read romantic suspense. Part of the reason is that I have a very active imagination and one of the first romantic suspense novels I read had me waking up in the middle of the night scared of some stalker in my dreams! So reading suspense may not be the best choice for me before bedtime. However, I was invited to a romantic suspense Facebook party for several Love Inspired, Christian authors. It was fun meeting the authors and getting to know more about their books. Believe it or not, during the online party, our neighborhood received a notice that there was an armed criminal on the run from a nearby store robbery while I was participating in the party. Thankfully the criminal was captured and the danger passed. Whew, I almost had my own ‘suspense’ story without a book!
One of the neat things that came out of the party is that I won a book by Terri Reed called, Duty Bound Guardian, part of the Capitol K-9 Unit series. What I enjoyed about this book was how Ms. Reed drew the characters, Lana and Adam out of their non-emotional personalities into characters with feeling. I love dogs, so Ace’s roll was a winner for me and I am thankful she didn’t have Ace shot, injured, or killed as many police dog stories tend to do. Ace is an excellent bridge between Lana and Adam often expressing the emotional attachment between the two characters before they have realized the attachment themselves. What I didn’t realize while reading the story was that this is part of a series of books that have a separate murder suspense storyline running through them that will be wrapped up by the end of the series. That being said I thought the story ended a little flat because there are still so many questions left unanswered and that left me feeling dissatisfied. Adam and Lana’s story; however, wraps up nicely and has a “happily ever after,” much to my satisfaction. I will be looking for more of this Love Inspired series and I hope you will too.
When a priceless artifact is stolen, museum curator Lana Gomez becomes the prime suspect. How can she hope to adopt her orphaned nephew if she’s a person of interest in a crime? Cooperating with Capitol K-9 Unit officer Adam Donovan doesn’t get her very far—the handsome cop thinks she’s hiding something. But when the real thief returns set on silencing Lana, it is Adam and his Doberman
pinscher, Ace, who become her only defense against a madman who wants nothing more than to see Lana eliminated.
